What is Balayage?

What is Balayage?

I wanted to take a moment and talk about  Balayage and what it looks like. The term “Balayage” gets brought up a lot by clients and I want to give you a little more information about it! So balayage is a technique not a look. Remember Chunky Foils or Ombré? Those were looks. Ombré for example, was a blending of one color to another and usually didn’t have much of a blended transition from one color to another. Usually the look was natural colored roots with blondish ends and no transition in between. Then the reemergence of balayage came back around to save the day! Good bye tired looking grown out hair with no transitions!!! UGH! The French meaning of balayage is ‘to sweep’. So by feathering the lightener in a freehand painting kind of way one is able to get a blended transition from just off the root to the ends. You get multiple tones of color instead of just 2. Picture Ombré as seeing a picture in 2D and Balayage in 3D. There’s more depth because its multidimensional . Now, here’s the down fall. You can’t always get as light as most people want their first visit. So multiple services are usually required.  Below are a few pictures of the balayage process. Rachel here only wanted a subtle change. So I did a free hand painted Balayage technique.

As you can see its a very subtle change. But, she can go about 8 months to a year without even getting it touched up. These pictures were taken March 2nd 2019 if that gives you an idea of the longevity of this technique. Now, if you want to be lighter, that’s when Foilage comes into play!  Foilage is a similar technique but the only difference is you put the hair in foils. It allows the hair to lighten up a lot more but still give you depth.. So the picture below of Sharon, who was referred to me by Rachel. Referrals are the best!!!! She wanted to be  lighter than Rachel so the foilage technique was a must. She will have to come back to the salon in about 2 months for a gloss. After that she can go about 4 months before getting her hair re lightened. Maybe longer.

So next time your on yelp searching, salon near me or balayage salons near me think less about the verbage and more about the look. Ask yourself a couple questions. Do I want maximum lift? How often do I want to come back into the salon? If you dont want to come back in often, frre hand balayage may be best. If you want to be bright, foilage might be your best bet. Another thing you need to think about is price. Remember you will only be getting this service done 2-4 times a year. It may seem like a lot up front but annually its cheaper than your Chunky Highlights  you did in the 90’s! Thank you for taking the time hang out! See you in the next article!

Color Correction Balayage

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to talk about color correction. I feel it’s getting lost in translation through social media. Anytime you have more than 3 colors in your hair it is considered color correction. This client here had not only 3 different colors but she also had gray. So basically 4 different areas that needed to be addressed. Since her ends were darker than the mid area I had to brighten up her ends to make sure we got rid of her spots. I also wanted to break up the part where the dark meets the light so I blended that with a demi permanent color (conditioning color with no ammonia) as to give it a more natural look. I then did baby lights (natural fine highlights) on top and sides. At the shampoo bowl I toned her and did whats called Tapping Out the Roots. That is where we put another demi permanent color on the root to give you a soft grow out.So right now the style is a lived in look. So basically a grown out rooty look with a soft contrast. The benefit of this,is,you can stay out of the salon for months!!! That is the long term benefit. In short,it can be costly and timely but usually the first visit is the most expensive. After that your put on a maintenance plan so you,ll know how much everything will be for the year. Roughly!! I hope this was’nt to complicated and I hope you got something out of it!! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!! Thank You!!

Natural Look Balayage

I would suggest a natural look balayage for anyone that already has naturally light hair. This look was created with a hand painted balayage technique that gives the hair a natural brightening affect with little to no maintenance . This client wanted a slight change and nothing to bold so a natural look balayage style was what we went with. You have color treated hair you say? No Problem!!! Of Course we can still do this technique for you. The only thing is the results may vary and your hair might not get as light, but here is the thing, I prefer to take people lighter in stages instead of blasting their hair shaft open with a high volume lightener. It keeps the integrity of the hair in great shape and it just looks better. With staged balayage treatments you’ll eventually get there, and have healthier hair. The healthier the hair the shinier the color and the better you look. We want you to look your very best and support the health of your hair.

Deep Root Cali Blonde

Balayage Blonde
Deep Root Cali Blonde

Some girls like it warm and some like it cold! This is a California Warm Blonde!! This client was solid ash blonde when she came to me. Whether Warm or Ash Blonde, in order for your blonde to POP, your hair must have depth in color. So adding a lot of low lights to the roots brings out the contrast in this Cali Blonde and a little punch! To maintain the integrity of the hair I gently lightened the ends a bit. Next time she comes in I’ll brighten the ends again to add a lot more contrast. I’ll keep you Posted!!!

Patience equals Perfection: From Brown to Blonde

Blonde Highlights in Dark Hair
Dark Brown to Blonde

This is Lisa. Shes been with me for about 2 years now. I haven’t always done her color in that time, but once she decided to start coming to me, she wanted to go from brown to blonde. Lisa is naturally pretty dark. Almost black. Even though Lisa has virgin hair its still hard going from almost black to this blonde. This is how I approached it. I let her know that there is no way I would blast her hair to get her where she wanted to be as that can damage her hair really bad. I personally don’t like doing that and I hate when I see that on any Woman. I prefer to take them up in stages. This was her 3rd visit. It took us about 9 months to get her here. Now, if she would have come in more often, then we may have been able to get her lighter sooner. I personally like how she was willing to give her hair the rest that needed. It allowed for her hair to lighten up in a more natural way and allowed us to get her lighter in fewer visits. The end result looks great on her and I’m happy with the way the blonde highlights turned out! Any questions you have just feel free to leave a comment, call, or text! I hope to hear from you and thanks for stopping by!!

Blonde Hairstyle: Baby Lights and Root Smudge

This blonde hairstyle is the process for a dimensional blonde. First we foil the whole head with blonde and some low lights. We then go in between the foils and break up any foil lines. At the bowl we do whats called, Tapping out the Root. This will give you a deeper root and prevent hard lines from growing out to give you more of a natural grow out. Expect to be in the salon for about 4 hours depending on the density of your hair!!! This is definitely a blonde hairstyle worth the time, and I’ll provide the wine!!

Classic Women’s Haircuts

Classic Women’s Haircuts: Classic’s never fade away!

This is one of the best classic women’s haircut. I’ve been doing Audrey’s’ hair for about 15 years now and she is always pretty open to change. Today when she came in she wanted something that was easy and no fuss. She has very straight hair with medium density and the back of her head is flat. If you look at the before pictures you can see how a the back of her head looks flat. Granted, shes way over due for a cut so she lost her shape long time before, but that look does nothing for her so I chose to not layer her hair. I wanted to give her the appearance that the back of her head wasn’t flat so this is why I chose this shape. She will not have to use a brush or a flat iron when she gets ready because of the density and texture of her hair! A fun shape to cut and a classic women’s haircut to wear!!

Bleach and Tone with a Peach Root

This is Amanda! As you can see she had so re growth that needed to be taken care of! Instead of just making her all blonde I added a pastel peach root to give it a bit of a difference. Also, when her hair grows out she wont have to worry about it as much as if it were all blonde. The haircut is a classic layered bob with a short bang. Easy to style or looks great if its left alone!!

Disconnected Haircut

So this is a way to change up the norm into something more fun. It’s not ovwr the top but its just enough to catch the eye. A disconnected haircut means there are different lengths that inter mingle with one another to give more movement and separation. It does not matter what tour age is,it’s about whether or not it’s suitable for your life style. Come into salon Ayla for a consultation and we can discuss tour new look!!!!!
